“Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.”
— Matthew 9:17 (KJV)
Have you ever wondered why Jesus teaches us in Matthew 9:16–17 that new wine must be put into new wineskins?
Jesus used this parable to teach a spiritual truth about the new thing God was bringing through Him. Just as new wine requires a wineskin capable of accommodating its expansion, the new life Jesus offers calls for a heart that is willing to receive what God is doing.
We can apply this truth to our own lives. We are vessels created by God, and He desires to fill our lives with His presence and transform us through the work of His Holy Spirit. Through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, we can be forgiven, restored, and brought into a relationship with our Heavenly Father.
In biblical times, wine was stored in leather containers called wineskins. As the wine fermented, it expanded, and the leather needed to remain flexible enough to accommodate that expansion. Over time, however, a wineskin could become old and lose its ability to stretch. If new wine were poured into an old, hardened wineskin, the pressure of fermentation could cause it to split, and the precious wine would be lost.
Jesus used parables to teach profound spiritual truths. He wanted us to look beyond what we could see and understand what God desires to do within us.
When we first come to know Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we become new in Him. Our bodies become temples of the Holy Spirit, and we are cleansed through His saving grace.
Psalm 103:12 tells us that God removes our transgressions from us as far as the east is from the west. In Isaiah 1:18, He promises that though our sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. And in Isaiah 43:25, God declares that He blots out our transgressions for His own sake and remembers our sins no more.
What a beautiful thing it is to be completely forgiven and made clean before God!
God desires fellowship with us. He desires good things for our lives, and His heart is for us to walk in the fullness of the life He has provided. That is why Jesus went to the cross and shed His precious blood for the forgiveness of our sins. He came so that we might have life and have it more abundantly.
Romans 6:23 tells us:
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
The wages of sin is death, but God has provided a way for us to receive eternal life through faith in His Son. His desire is that we turn to Him, receive His forgiveness, and walk in the new life He offers.
John 3:16 reminds us:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
And John 3:17 continues by reminding us that God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
God’s heart is revealed through the sacrifice of Jesus. He made a way for us to be forgiven, restored, and brought into fellowship with Him.
But receiving Christ is only the beginning of a beautiful journey.
Just as a wineskin must remain flexible to hold new wine, we must allow God to continue working in our hearts and lives. We cannot cling to the old ways of thinking, the old patterns of living, or the things that keep us from growing in our relationship with Him. We must be willing to surrender, to be renewed, and to allow the Holy Spirit to transform us from within.
Jesus does not simply want to be a part of our lives. He desires to live His life through us.
Today, the choice is yours.
Will you open your heart and allow Jesus to take His rightful place in your life? Will you allow Him to renew your mind, soften your heart, and make you a vessel prepared for His purpose?
