Forgiveness of Sin
Have you ever stopped to think about what it really means to be forgiven of your sins?
Jesus died on the cross so that our sins could be forgiven and we could be restored to a right relationship with God. His death paid the price for our sins, making a way for us to receive forgiveness and reconciliation with our Heavenly Father.
Our sins were nailed to the cross with Him. Through His sacrifice, we can receive new life in Him.
Psalm 103:12 (KJV) says:
“As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”
Think about the significance of that promise! When God forgives us, He removes our sins from us. We no longer have to live under the weight of guilt and condemnation from our past. Through Jesus Christ, we can walk in the freedom of God’s forgiveness.
Understanding Who Jesus Is
To understand the forgiveness of sin, we must first understand who Jesus Christ is and what He accomplished for us.
Jesus Christ is God the Son, who took on human flesh and came into the world to save us from our sins. We believe in one God, revealed in three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This is the biblical doctrine of the Trinity.
Jesus willingly laid down His life and paid the price for our sins so that we could be reconciled to God.
Romans 6:23 (KJV) tells us:
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Sin carries a penalty, but God, in His great love for us, provided a way for us to receive forgiveness and eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Salvation is God’s gracious gift to us. We cannot earn it, and we cannot save ourselves. We must recognize our need for a Savior and put our faith in Jesus Christ.
How Do We Receive Forgiveness?
The Bible teaches that we have all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory.
Romans 3:23 (KJV) says:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Not one of us can claim righteousness through our own efforts. We all need the saving grace of Jesus Christ.
Our sins separate us from God, but through Jesus, the way has been opened for us to be reconciled to Him.
So, how do we receive this gift of salvation?
We must acknowledge that Jesus is the Son of God, believe that He died for our sins and rose again on the third day, repent of our sins, and receive Him as Lord and Savior.
Romans 10:9–10 (KJV) says:
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
There is a beautiful simplicity to the gospel message. We do not have to clean ourselves up before coming to Jesus. We come to Him recognizing our need for His mercy, trusting in His finished work on the cross, and surrendering our lives to Him.
Confess. Repent. Believe. Receive.
Recognize your sin, turn away from it, believe in Jesus Christ, and receive Him as your Lord and Savior.
That is the beginning of a new life with God!
What Does It Mean to Be Forgiven?
When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we receive God’s forgiveness through His grace. Our sins are forgiven, and we are reconciled to Him.
Let’s return to Psalm 103:12:
“As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”
What an incredible picture of God’s mercy!
God does not ask us to remain chained to the sins He has forgiven. Through Jesus Christ, we can be free from the guilt of our past and walk forward in the new life He has given us.
Micah 7:19 (KJV) says:
“Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.”
When God forgives us, He does not hold our forgiven sins against us as a debt we must continue to pay. Through Christ, we are no longer condemned for our sins.
This does not mean that our choices never have earthly consequences or that we will never struggle with sin again. Rather, it means that we can stand before God, trusting in the forgiveness Jesus purchased for us.
We no longer have to live as prisoners of our past. We can learn from our mistakes, grow in our faith, and allow the Holy Spirit to transform our lives.
Forgiveness is not permission to continue living in sin. It is an invitation to live a new life in Christ.
Remember the Day You Received Jesus!
When you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, recognize the significance of that moment.
Remember the day you surrendered your life to Him. Remember the moment you acknowledged your need for a Savior and placed your faith in Jesus.
Your decision to follow Christ is a life-changing step!
You have received salvation by grace through faith—not because of your own goodness or works, but because of God’s love and mercy.
Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV) reminds us:
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Salvation is a gift that we could never earn. Jesus paid the price we could not pay, and through Him, we receive the promise of eternal life.
There is another beautiful promise for those who belong to Christ: the hope of an eternal home with Him.
Jesus said in John 14:2–3 that He was going to prepare a place for His followers and would come again to receive them unto Himself.
What a wonderful assurance to carry in your heart! This world is not our final home. Through Jesus Christ, we have the hope of spending eternity with Him.
Revelation 21:27 describes the holy city and speaks of those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
Our hope is not in our ability to make ourselves worthy, but in the finished work of Jesus Christ and the faithfulness of God.
Nothing can replace what Jesus accomplished for us on the cross!
Only the Blood of Jesus Can Wash Away Our Sins
We can try to forget our mistakes, cover our past, or convince ourselves that we are good enough on our own. But we cannot remove our sins through our own efforts.
Only Jesus Christ can cleanse us from sin.
1 John 1:7 (KJV) tells us:
“And the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
The blood Jesus shed on the cross made the way for our forgiveness and cleansing.
Being forgiven means that we no longer have to carry the burden of unforgiven sin before God. We can receive His mercy, walk in His grace, and trust that He is faithful to His promises.
God’s forgiveness is not based on our ability to erase our past. It is based on the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf.
What we could never accomplish for ourselves, Jesus accomplished for us!
What Happens When We Sin After We Are Saved?
Does receiving salvation mean that we will never sin again?
No. As believers, we are called to pursue holiness, but we may still stumble and fall. The difference is that we now have the privilege of coming before God in repentance, seeking His forgiveness, and allowing Him to correct and restore us.
1 John 1:9 (KJV) says:
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Notice the assurance in this verse: God is faithful and just to forgive us when we confess our sins to Him.
When we sin, we should not run away from God in shame. We should run to Him in humility and repentance.
Confess your sins. Turn away from what is wrong. Ask God for forgiveness and for the strength to walk in obedience.
Through the Holy Spirit, God helps us grow, change, and become more like Christ.
We are not called to use God’s grace as an excuse to remain in sin. We are called to allow His grace to transform us.
The same God who forgives us is able to help us grow beyond the things we once struggled with.
Jesus Came So That We Could Have Abundant Life!
Forgiveness is not merely about having our sins erased from our record. It is about being reconciled to God and entering into a new relationship with Him.
Through Jesus Christ, we can experience the peace of knowing that we belong to God, the freedom of walking in His grace, and the joy of growing in His presence.
Jesus said in John 10:10 (KJV):
“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
Jesus came to give us life!
He came to rescue us from sin, reconcile us to the Father, and give us the opportunity to live in fellowship with Him.
This abundant life does not mean that we will never experience hardship, disappointment, or sorrow. It means that even in difficult seasons, we can have hope, peace, and confidence in the One who saved us.
We can live with the assurance that our past does not have to define our future.
We can walk in forgiveness, grow in faith, and live each day with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Final Thoughts: Do You Understand What It Really Means to Be Forgiven?
Forgiveness of sin is one of the greatest gifts God has given us through Jesus Christ.
Jesus took our place on the cross. He paid the price for our sins, died, and rose again so that we could receive forgiveness and eternal life.
We could not save ourselves, but God made a way for us through His Son.
When we repent and put our faith in Jesus Christ, we receive His forgiveness and begin a new life with Him.
So, if you have never surrendered your life to Jesus, you can come to Him today. You do not have to remain bound by your past or believe that your sins have placed you beyond the reach of God’s mercy.
If you are already a believer who has stumbled along the way, remember the promise of 1 John 1:9. Confess your sins to God, receive His forgiveness, and allow the Holy Spirit to lead you forward.
You are not saved by your own perfection. You are saved by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ.
Remember these four words:
CONFESS. REPENT. BELIEVE. RECEIVE.
And never forget what Jesus has done for you.
He died so that you could be forgiven. He rose again so that you could have new life. Through Him, you can have the hope of eternal life with God.
Forgiveness is God’s gift. Salvation is His grace. Jesus is our Savior. Abundant life is found in Him!
To God be the glory!
